On the 21st, it was known that Shin Chang-won 안전놀이터(56), the ‘escaped prisoner of the era’, tried to make an extreme choice in prison. Shin was taken to the hospital and is receiving treatment.
According to the Ministry of Justice on the 22nd, Shin Chang-won was discovered by prison staff at around 8:00 pm the previous day while trying to make an extreme choice in his cell in Daejeon Prison. Shortly after his discovery, he was taken to the hospital and his life was not reported to be in danger. An official from the Ministry of Justice said, “An employee who was patrolling found Mr. Shin and responded appropriately.”
In March 1989, Shin Chang-won was arrested and sentenced to life imprisonment for breaking into a house in Donam-dong, Seongbuk-gu, Seoul, stealing money and goods worth about 30 million won, and stabbing the landlord to death.

However, in January 1997, when he was in his 8th year in prison, Shin Chang-won tore off the wire mesh on the bathroom vent in his cell and escaped from the Busan prison, where he escaped for two and a half years. He was caught in July 1999 and sentenced to an additional 22 years and 6 months in prison. Since then, he has been imprisoned in solitary confinement for about 20 years and has received ‘special guard’ through CCTV .
However, Shin Chang-won tried an extreme choice in August 2011 while he was imprisoned in North Gyeongsangbuk-do Prison, but was discovered and transferred to the hospital. He also filed a complaint with the Human Rights Commission in 2020, saying, ” Through the CCTV installed in the living room, even the appearance of toileting in the bathroom is exposed.”
